Garber happy with American investors

Major League Soccer boss Don Garber believes the influx of American owners to the Premier League is a big help to the sport in the United States.

Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa are all owned by Americans - Malcolm Glazer, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, and Randy Lerner respectively, while Stan Kroenke has a 12% stake in Arsenal.

MLS commissioner Garber believes overseas investment will be positive for the game in America, saying at a press conference: "I think it's the greatest thing for the sport there is."

He added: "Here you have (Randy Lerner), a guy that has deeply invested in American football, both believing in (soccer) and going out and investing in it. That's a good thing for us.

"Having Tom Hicks invest in Liverpool is a good thing for us and you should watch what could potentially happen with some of these relationships that could exist.

"As we look today there is no shortage of owner interest in investing in Major League Soccer. Candidly, we have more interest than we have teams within a logical roll out of our expansion.

"It would be a concern if this was to have happened in 2001 and we were thinking 'how do we grow the league?' and all the interest was in investing in football overseas rather than in Major League Soccer."
