The 23-year-old was forced to pull out of the champions' engage Super League match at Leeds last weekend after being attacked in his home town of Barrow-in-Furness. A 19-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and released on bail.
"There is bleeding in and around the eye and swelling - his vision is impaired," said coach Daniel Anderson. "It is a concern. He won't play until the specialist gives him the green light. At the moment, it's indefinite."
Gardner, who scored eight tries in his first 12 matches for the champions, was hoping to push for a place in the Great Britain team to play France on June 22.
He made his Test debut against New Zealand at Knowsley Road last June but was not selected for the end-of-season Tri-Nations Series.
Gardner's centre partner Matt Gidley returns to the side against Harlequins on Sunday after missing the Leeds defeat through illness, and scrum-half Sean Long will play after shaking off an ankle injury.
