Gatting: I won't add selector to my bow

Former England captain Mike Gatting, who is beginning a spell as the England and Wales Cricket Board's new managing director of cricket partnerships, has ruled out becoming a Test selector in the near future.

Gatting's new role has given him a remit to look at ways of improving the game from grass-roots level right up to the professional structure and, although the international teams are not under his jurisdiction he intends to be a visible presence while they are taking place.

He said: "There is so much to do here and there is lots to get my teeth into. There are county chairmen and county executives to see and as I will be trying to hare around the country I don't think I would have enough time to do that job as well. I have enough on my plate doing this - and I think I will enjoy it."

Gatting is hoping to give the umpiring structure an overhaul by introducing coaching courses that use the technological innovations already in use at the top of the strata.

There are around 10,000 officials, including scorers, throughout the country and most are members of the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers, a long-established and independent body.

Gatting wants them to come under the ECB umbrella and become part of a new organisation - the Association of Cricket Officials.

The former Middlesex batsman, who scored more than 4,000 runs for his country in a career spanning three decades, said: "My job is about partnerships and this is a huge one. We would love the ACU and S members to come on board.

"We have the tools to go forward. We have accredited courses in place with new developments to help them become better umpires.

"We would like them to become part of the family so we can help them do what they would like to do. We want to be united."
