Gay edges Devonish in the rain

Marlon Devonish came within a tenth of a second of defeating this summer's world 100metres number one Tyson Gay with another superb display at the Norwich Union British Grand Prix in Sheffield.

Devonish continued his recent fine form but was edged out by the American star, who clocked a time of 10.13 seconds.

However, the British team captain had the satisfaction of beating European champion Francis Obikwelu, who recorded 10.24secs in a slow race ruined by a wet track at the Don Valley Stadium.

Gay - whose time of 9.84secs at the United States Championships is the fastest in the world this year - was, not surprisingly, well shy of Asafa Powell's world record of 9.77secs.
