Gayle set for swift return

Chris Gayle is on course to make a surprise return for West Indies in Friday's opening one-day international against England.

The 29-year-old West Indies captain was expected to miss the first few matches of the five-match series after sustaining a hamstring problem in the final Test in Trinidad.

But after several days of intensive treatment, Gayle has been named in a 13-man squad for the opening two matches in Georgetown and will provide a major boost to West Indies' hopes of building on their surprise victory in the Test series.

Gayle currently lies third in the ICC world one-day batting rankings and will take over the captaincy from Dinesh Ramdin, who guided West Indies to an emphatic six-wicket victory in Sunday's Twenty20 international at the Queen's Park Oval.

West Indies will, however, be without seamer Jerome Taylor after he failed to recover from a left calf strain and has been overlooked for the start of the series.
