Gayle stands by comments

West Indies captain Chris Gayle does not care about Test cricket's future and stood by his pointed comments about his England counterpart Andrew Strauss.

Gayle was criticised last week for joining up with his West Indies team-mates just two days before the first Test against England at Lord's due to Indian Premier League commitments. Strauss said he did not believe two days was long enough preparation for a Test match and expressed concern about Test cricket's well-being.

But 29-year-old Gayle told Sky Sports News: "You say what you have to say. Basically I said it how it is. You should be focusing on these couple of Test matches and trying to organise the team. I am not going to get into details about this any more. We have a very important game coming up and I am looking forward to it."

Gayle leads his team into the second Test against England at the Riverside on Thursday looking to bounce back from their 10-wicket loss at Lord's.

The Jamaican still views Test cricket as the prime form of the game but says he would not be sad if it died out as Twenty20 took over.

He said: "That is my personal view, pertaining to me and my relationship with Test cricket.

"I don't know how long my future will last in Test cricket. You have to take into consideration a lot of cricket has been played and this new Twenty20 version has come along, which has been brilliant.

"I am looking forward to it. Test cricket will always be here but it is about me and my future."

Strauss has also stood by his views on the matter.

The England skipper said: "I believe very strongly Test cricket should be the ultimate form of the game and therefore we should prepare for Test matches in a manner befitting that. I feel if our players turned up two days before (a Test match) that wouldn't give us enough time to prepare properly."
