Murray teamed up with Greg Rusedski to win Saturday's doubles and give the home side an unassailable 3-0 lead in the Euro/Africa Zone Group One tie.
But the 21-year-old doubles specialist faded fast after winning the first set 6-4, losing a second-set tie-break 7-0 and the deciding set 6-2.
Tim Henman had little trouble sealing a 4-1 victory for the home side, beating Igor Sijsling in straight sets.
The British number two broke twice to win the opening set 6-2 in front of a sizeable crowd which had turned up despite the tie being settled on Saturday.
And the 32-year-old took advantage of a double fault from his opponent to claim the solitary break he needed to win the second 6-3.
