Gerrard scores last-gasp winner

Steven Gerrard grabbed the winner in the fourth minute of injury-time to give Liverpool at 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough at Anfield.

Boro looked like they were going to win for the first time at Liverpool since 1976 when Mido put them ahead with 20 minutes left.

But first Jamie Carragher had a drive deflected into the net by Emanuel Pogatetz with five minutes of normal time left, before Gerrard grabbed the points.

A pre-match injury to Boro goalkeeper Brad Jones meant Ross Turnbull was thrust into action at the last moment.

After three minutes Fernando Torres surged towards the penalty area and fed Dirk Kuyt, whose fierce drive was turned aside at full stretch by Turnbull.

Andrea Dossena fired over a swirling cross-shot which Turnbull pushed behind, but there was a lengthy delay when Dossena and Jeremie Aliadiere clashed heads, both leaving the field. Boro's French forward returned with his head heavily bandaged, while Dossena needed a stitch before being allowed back into the fray.

Despite having the majority of possession in the first half, Liverpool did not create clear chances and it then took a fine flying save from Jose Reina to touch over an 18-yard shot from Andrew Taylor at the other end.

After Torres had gone close, Boro grabbed the lead after 70 minutes when Mido's fierce, low drive beat Reina and found the bottom right corner.

However, the hosts drew level when Carragher made the most of Mike Riley playing an advantage after a shot from Xabi Alonso hit Gary O'Neil's arm. Amid loud appeals for a spot-kick, Carragher unleashed a shot which looked to be going off target but deflected past the unlucky Turnbull off Emanuel Pogatetz.

In the fourth minute of added time Liverpool's talisman smashed home the winner, driving the ball into the right corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area after David Wheater's poor defensive header.
