Giants clinch Whatuira deal

Huddersfield have snapped up star New Zealand centre Paul Whatuira on a three-year contract from Wests Tigers.

The 26-year-old is the Giants' first major signing for 2008 and brings the experience of winning two Grand Finals in Australia's NRL competition.

He will join three former Wests team-mates at the Galpharm Stadium in John Skandalis, Shane Elford and Jamahl Lolesi.

Whatuira, who was also linked with engage Super League bottom side Salford, said: "Over the past few weeks I have been in serious discussions with a number of clubs in both the NRL and Super League whilst giving consideration to the next stage of my rugby league career.

"Huddersfield Giants have shown themselves to be a very professional and progressive club with a strong desire to have me with them in 2008 and beyond.

"Having been fortunate enough to have won two NRL Titles, my ambition is to be part of an ambitious Super League club that like me has ambitions to win trophies and championships."

Whatuira has won 10 international caps for the Kiwis and has previously played for New Zealand Warriors, Melbourne Storm and Penrith Panthers.

Giants head coach Jon Sharp said: "To sign a player like this is awesome for the club.

"Paul is a fantastic player and a current New Zealand international, and will be a tremendous addition to our squad."
