Giants close in on Faiumu

Huddersfield are close to signing New Zealand international David Faiumu from North Queensland Cowboys.

The Giants, without a coach following the sacking of Jon Sharp earlier this week, have lined up the 25-year-old hooker or second-rower as a direct replacement for George Gatis, who returned home to Australia in April for personal reasons.

Huddersfield managing director Richard Thewlis said: "Talks with David commenced some three weeks ago and verbal agreement was reached subject to the usual overseas issues."

Faiumu, who has made 75 NRL appearances for the Cowboys since making his debut in 2004, played for the Kiwis in the second Test against Great Britain at Hull in November and won his ninth cap against France a fortnight later.
