Giants sack Sharp

Jon Sharp became the third Super League coach in a fortnight to lose his job on Monday when he was sacked by struggling Huddersfield.

The Giants have terminated the contract of Sharp with immediate effect and placed his assistants Paul Anderson and Kieron Purtill in temporary charge.

"Under Jon Sharp the Giants reached the Challenge Cup final two years ago and last year after losing their first seven matches achieved a top-six finish," said Huddersfield chairman Ken Davy. "Unfortunately, our results and performances this year have proved a major disappointment for everyone including Jon."

He added: "The process of appointing a new coach will begin shortly, and in the meantime Paul Anderson and Kieron Purtill will take temporary charge of the squad."

Sharp, who took over at the Galpharm Stadium from Tony Smith in 2003, became Super League's longest-serving coach following Paul Cullen's departure from Warrington a week ago, but they are currently third from bottom of the table and lost 48-0 to Catalans Dragons in their last match.
