Gilchrist sparkles for Australia

Adam Gilchrist lit up cricket's biggest stage with the highest individual score in World Cup final history as Australia blasted 281 for four against Sri Lanka at Kensington Oval .

Gilchrist, without a hundred previously in this competition or in any one-day international cricket for more than a year, hit 13 fours and eight sixes in his 104-ball 149 to put his team on the verge of a record third consecutive Cup crown.

The wicketkeeper-batsman had only two half-centuries under his belt in his Caribbean campaign but dominated an opening stand of 172 with the prolific Matthew Hayden in this match reduced because of rain to 38 overs a side.
