Clough, 42, has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal to become Paul Jewell's successor in the Pride Park hotseat, leaving his post at Blue Square Premier leaders Burton.

Rams chief executive and president Tom Glick told the club's official website: "I have no doubt that Nigel will get a phenomenal reception when he is presented to the supporters ahead of kick-off against Manchester United (on Wednesday night)."

He added: "This is a tremendously exciting appointment and one that the entire Derby County family will rally behind - owners, players, staff and the fans. I think we have some exciting times ahead."

Clough's father Brian won the league with the Rams in 1972 and Clough junior is the man charged with trying to bring the glory days back to the club.

He won 14 caps for England and represented Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, Manchester City and Sheffield Wednesday in his playing career before becoming player-manager at Burton in 1998.

The Brewers were in the Southern League at the time but now sit proudly top of the Blue Square Premier and well on course for promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history.

But Clough is delighted to have been given the "fantastic opportunity" to follow in his father's footsteps.

He added: "Derby County has everything - tremendous support, a first-class stadium, magnificent training facilities and an ambitious ownership group looking to grow the club even further.

"I know the club inside out. It has always had a special place in mine and my family's heart, and I know that this is one of the most exciting jobs in football. This is going to be a tremendous challenge."
