Gold rush mental challenge for Hoy

Double gold medallist Chris Hoy is finding Britain's astounding success in the Olympic track cycling a challenge to his mental fortitude as he battles to stay focused on the task at hand.

Hoy and Bradley Wiggins ensured Great Britain's gold rush continued at the Laoshan Velodrome with wins in the keirin and the individual pursuit, while there was a silver for Ross Edgar in the keirin, a bronze for Steven Burke in the pursuit and a bronze for Chris Newton in the points race.

"It's been an eventful day and so many things happen you just try and block it all out and focus on your ride and focus on your performance and that's what I did and to finish with one-two on the podium, that's just unbelievable," he said.

"There are so many things going on around you.

"Bradley and Steven coming first and third was just incredible, the girls getting one and two in the final on Sunday and Chris winning the bronze in the points, it's been such an amazing day for the team but you have to focus on your ride and not think about the stuff that's happening around you.

"You have to stay focused and not get overexcited by it all. We expected it was possible with the kind of form everyone has had and now the standard in the team is such that if you get in the team you're going to be a realistic medal chance. That's just the way it is.

"But if you get too excited, you watch someone like Bradley going up to the podium right before the keirin final. I didn't look at him or the flag, I didn't want to look at the emotion on his face because I knew that would set me off.

"I was just trying to show a little bit of respect by standing up when the ceremony was on, but I was trying to block it out of my mind as much as possible because again it's about the process of the performance.

"You're not thinking about anything else outside that. You're only thinking about what you've got control over and that's what we all try to do and it seems to work."
