Gordon sees Scots strength in adversity

Craig Gordon predicts the number of call-offs for the friendly in Japan will bring the best out of Scotland's depleted squad.

Nine of George Burley's original selection have pulled out of the trip through injury while both Scott Robertson and Kevin Kyle turned down late call-ups, but Gordon feels Scotland are at their best in adversity.

"We will have to gel together as a very new squad, there are a great deal of first caps coming in," Gordon, whose 37 caps make him the most experienced player in the group, told BBC Scotland. "We'll have to stick together, it will be a difficult game for us. Scotland in general, when their backs are against the wall, come out fighting."

He added: "And I think with the amount that everyone has to play for, the new guys coming in and trying to stay in the squad, we should have a good fighting performance.

"It's a great opportunity for them. I'm sure most of the players will get on the pitch at some point and they've got everything to prove to the manager for the next campaign."

Gordon also dismissed criticism of the location for the friendly.

"It's great to come over here and experience what they have here," the 26-year-old added. "It's a different way of life and different culture and it's nice to have a look at it.

"The flight was no problem, I managed to sleep for most of it anyway.

"I feel okay and I'm sure by the time the game comes everything will be out the legs and we'll be okay to play."
