England's comprehensive defeat in the fourth Ashes Test at Headingley has prompted calls for a shake-up of the batting line-up before the decisive final Test at The Oval starting on August 20.

"I believe Marcus would be more willing to end his self-imposed retirement if he was told he did not have to be available for any tours due to his much-publicised [stress-related] medical condition," Gould told The Times.

Cases have been built for the inclusion of Robert Key, Mark Ramprakash and Jonathan Trott in the XI for the fifth Test, while Trescothick has been in outstanding form for Somerset this season.

He has not played for England since returning home before the start of the 2006-07 Ashes series in Australia and subsequently announced his international retirement.

Stress-related problems make his return to the side on a permanent basis a virtual impossibility, but Gould believes the 33-year-old could have a part to play when England are at home if the England and Wales Cricket Board will consider calling players up in such circumstances.

He added: "There may not be anything written down but this is understood to have been the ECB's policy over the past few years -- often for good reason, to ensure players do not pick and choose their tours. I do not think this has been raised within the cricket committee as an issue because this is an issue that is so specific to one case.

"Does this mean the highest-scoring batsman in English cricket this season should not be available for matches in England? Events change -- no one thought we would lose Kevin Pietersen from the Test series.

"There are not many truly world-class performers and those that are, like Marcus, need to be kept on the pitch for as long as possible. He is absolutely at the top of his game, still one of the best batsmen in the world with an unabated hunger for runs."
