Grant defends Shevchenko

Andriy Shevchenko still has a big role to play at Chelsea, according to coach Avram Grant.

The Ukraine striker was called into action during the 1-0 victory against Bolton at the Reebok Stadium after stepping off the bench but never looked like adding to the one goal he has scored in this campaign.

"We have a long season and he is trying hard. He is a great player," said Shevchenko. "I am sure he will be good for Chelsea. In this game we needed other players."

He added: "They pay me to be in charge. I have to be in charge and take the decision for the present and the future. I want to take the team forward."

A goal from Salomon Kalou after 41 minutes was enough to seal a narrow victory against the struggling home side.

Chelsea's win capped a good week for Grant as it came on the back of a Champions League success against Valencia in Spain.

Following Jose Mourinho was always going to be a tough task but Grant said: "I do not want to live in football without pressure.

"When you are at a big club you always have pressure if you want to achieve the best.

"There is extra pressure if you want to change the way Chelsea play.

"It is a big responsibility but I like it. I like to put pressure on myself. The name of the game is pressure. It is not a game for weakness."
