Grant joins Chelsea
08 January 2007
A widely reported friend of owner Roman Abramovich, the former Israel boss will be working closely with boss Jose Mourinho, the club confirmed, as well as chief executive Peter Kenyon and Frank Arnesen, who oversees youth development.
"Grant will be responsible for liaison on, and co-ordination of, football matters across the various areas of Chelsea," read a statement from Chelsea.
"He will also sit on the football club board and report to chief executive Peter Kenyon."
Grant, who was previously technical director at Portsmouth, will travel with the squad this week for the pre-season tour to Los Angeles as Chelsea start their plans to win back the Barclays Premier League title from Manchester United.
Earlier in the week, Kenyon called for unity this season after the last campaign was dogged by suggestions of in-fighting and a deteriorating relationship between Abramovich and Mourinho.
"There were various issues as there are at every club," said Kenyon. "That has been addressed and I'm confident about next season and that aspect of Chelsea. I don't think anyone wants a repeat of last year."
Grant's arrival is one of the final parts of Chelsea's summer recruitment, with Alex and Florent Malouda expected to bolster Mourinho's playing squad.
There are also hopes of Frank Lampard and John Terry committing their long-term futures to the club.
Kenyon revealed at the launch of the new club's new training facilities that the board, which Grant will sit on, set the limits for player salaries in negotiations with Lampard and Terry.
