Grant's reminder to his troops

Avram Grant will tell his players they are on the brink of greater things if they can keep their momentum going over the last three games of the season.

Chelsea face Newcastle on Monday afternoon and a win will set up a dramatic final day of the season next Sunday before the Blues face title foes Manchester United in the Champions League final on May 21 in Moscow.

"You cannot say to the players 'you have not achieved anything'," said Grant. "You can say to them that they are all in the book of history at the club."

He added: "But we can achieve more, not only this year, we can put this club in another place.

"I want to say to the players and staff and everybody in the club, they did a great job. They made history and nobody can take it from them. But we can make it bigger."

First Chelsea must overcome a rejuvenated Newcastle side under Kevin Keegan and Grant is delighted that despite a rocky start, the former England manager has turned their fortunes around on Tyneside.

Grant is all for giving managers a chance and the beginning of Keegan's second term at United and the stuttering start of Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford are just two examples of why he believes clubs should be patient when change arrives.

The 52-year-old Israeli suffered the same kind of early criticism after taking over from ousted Jose Mourinho last September.

"It shows sometimes you need to patient with a manager," said Grant. "The club were patient with Keegan and now they are playing good football and scoring a lot of goals. It will be a tough game.

"In England you admire power more than good thinking. I have a feeling that the person who is shouting more is more respectable sometimes. Not just managers."
