Graveney checks out performance programme

Chairman of selectors David Graveney has visited the England and Wales Cricket Board's Performance Programme squad in India.

The squad, formerly known as the Academy, are usually based at Loughborough but recently travelled to India for match practice close to the senior party in Sri Lanka.

Graveney, who has flown to Chennai from Sri Lanka on a two-day trip, said: "It's really just to make sure the guys know there are a number of people who could be possible replacements if there were injuries in Sri Lanka."

He added: "Generally they are the next best group of cricketers in the UK. What they do here, if they perform, it's important. It's a chance to speak to them on behalf of the selectors and it's worked well."

Graveney, however, refused to be drawn on whether any of the squad were currently considered on standby to fly to Sri Lanka.

Batsman Kevin Pietersen fractured a finger and seamer Matthew Hoggard gave England a scare by leaving the field with a back injury.

Graveney said: "I don't wish to go into names because there are still options in the UK.

"These guys here know they have been identified as players for the future and it is a great opportunity for them."

England's performance programme side are currently playing a three-day match against an MRF XI in Chennai.
