Graveney hails Sidebottom

Ryan Sidebottom will take his place in England's line-up for this week's third Test against West Indies having been held up as a shining example of the rewards for performing in county cricket.

Sidebottom, who played one wicketless Test in 2001, claimed eight wickets on his return to action during the Headingley Test, and chairman of selectors David Graveney believes he should now be regarded as an inspiration to county cricketers with England aspirations.

"The selection of Ryan speaks volumes for our domestic game," claimed Graveney. "He's developed his game with the coaches at Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire and swings the ball much more than when he previously played for England."

Sidebottom's promotion has been all the more impressive because he has leapfrogged over players like Lancashire's James Anderson and Durham seamer Graham Onions - both of whom were named in the 25-man development squad at the start of the season - to earn his second chance.

Graveney added: "The performance squad we announced at the beginning of the season is not a closed shop - if you're not in that 25 you can still play for England.

"It shows to anyone in county cricket that if they put the performances in we will watch and hopefully they will get their chance."
