Gunners forced to dig deep

Arsene Wenger admits Ajax gave Arsenal a stern examination of their Champions League credentials on Friday night - when they were forced to produce a remarkable second-half comeback to win their Amsterdam Tournament clash.

Ajax were leading 2-0 thanks to Luis Suarez and Klaas Jan Huntelaar before two goals from Emmanuel Adebayor sandwiched by a Nicklas Bendtner effort gave the Gunners a 3-2 win.

"It was ideal preparation, because it was a pacy game," said Wenger. "We wanted an intense game, and I think Ajax gave us more than we wanted. They fought for every ball and played well."

He added: "In the whole game, we were always dangerous going forward. But they took advantage of two lapses of concentration and scored two fantastic goals.

"Both goals were unstoppable, with a great finish. They were sharp, incisive and took advantage of every mistake we made.

"Some players are still a bit short physically, but I am not really concerned.

"We were much better defensively in the second half.

"In the first half, our position on the pitch was not right. We changed that at half-time - and from then on it was much more difficult for Ajax to play."
