Gym'll fix it for Calzaghe

Joe Calzaghe has paid a special tribute to his team-mates as he makes final preparations for a fight which could underline his status as one of the finest fighters of all time.

When Calzaghe first claimed the WBO super-middleweight title 10 years ago he trained virtually alone at the old and down-at-heel gym in Newbridge which had been set up by his father Enzo, but his success sparked a revolution in Welsh boxing and Calzaghe now shares training sessions with fellow world champions Enzo Maccarinelli and Gavin Rees.

Calzaghe said: "I used to train in solitude, but now we've got all these other guys coming through. We all have a team spirit, so we feed off each other and support each other when we fight. We are all together instead of being stuck in there on our own and it makes a big difference."

He added: "I can honestly say that training at this stage of my career has never been so enjoyable. We all spar with each other and we always want to be the fastest at running or quickest on the pads, and it's great."

Calzaghe's fitness was evident at Friday's weigh-in for Saturday night's massive unification bout against Mikkel Kessler in which his own WBO title and Kessler's WBC and WBA belts will be on the line.

Despite years of battling to make the weight, the 35-year-old Calzaghe scaled more than pound below the 12-stone limit while Kessler was the one forced to strip naked to shake off the final two ounces.

Kessler and his camp clearly believe they are catching Calzaghe at the right time, but the Welshman says despite the advancing years and his longevity as champion he has lost none of his drive and determination.

He added: "People think I haven't got the hunger for this fight, but believe me you have to got to have tremendous hunger to be able to train like I've trained, because this is only my second unification fight.

"It's great fighting someone else who has other belts because I've got so much to gain from winning this fight. I want to retire undefeated and I know this is going to be my toughest challenge yet."
