Hadden has high hopes for defence
09 January 2007
The Scots' 19-13 World Cup quarter-final defeat to Argentina has left them to reflect on how such a glorious opportunity to reach the last eight was squandered but Hadden has attempted to ease the frustration by highlighting his side's growing resilience.
"Argentina had so much territorial advantage but our defence was immense in coping with that," he said. "There's an edge to our defence now. It's been good for a while but there's an edge to it now that will stand us in good stead."
He added: "It's a punishing defence and makes it difficult for other teams to get going. That's the tale of this World Cup.
"Defences are pretty much getting a stranglehold on the game and making it difficult for teams to play."
Hadden, who is taking a holiday himself, hopes his players will be given some time off before resuming domestic action.
"I've spoken to Sean Lineen and Andy (coaches of Glasgow and Edinburgh)," he said. "We had some loose plans in place which have been altered because there's no Magners League game a week on Sunday.
"I don't want to say too much but one or two of the guys might be available this week.
"The guys who have taken the brunt of the competition will have a little bit longer.
"I'm hearing some positive sounds from some of the guys in the Guinness Premiership, that they've been told to take 10 days or a week off before they start. We're delighted with that, but I've also heard from some others that they're going back on Tuesday."
