Half-back problems for Salford

Salford could have a half-back crisis for their Murrayfield clash against Harlequins, with ever-present New Zealanders Robbie Paul and Jeremy Smith both rated doubtful.

Paul sustained a neck injury while Smith, who has started all 12 matches since joining the Reds in the close season from South Sydney, damaged a knee in Saturday's 18-14 defeat by Hull.

"Robbie fortunately hasn't broken anything but he did suffer a trauma to his shoulder and neck area and would have to be rated as extremely doubtful at this stage," said coach Shaun McRae. "Jeremy's knee is improving and the signs are good but we are still waiting to see the full extent of the damage. He caught his knee awkwardly in a tackle and again I'd say you'd have to rate him as doubtful to play."

McRae expects prop Craig Stapleton to recover from a minor foot problem and second-rower Ian Sibbit will return from suspension for Saturday's opening game of the Magic Weekend in Edinburgh.
