Hamilton appears unhurt after crash

World Championship leader Lewis Hamilton suffered a frightening smash in qualifying for Sunday's European Grand Prix.

Hamilton's McLaren hurtled into a tyre barrier at the Nurburgring circuit in Germany after a front-right suspension failure led to a puncture.

After being attended to by stewards, Hamilton was eventually lifted into the back of the ambulance with his neck in a precautionary brace. However, he was able to indicate he was okay by waving his right arm and giving a 'thumbs-up' sign.

A track official also confirmed that Hamilton was "conscious and talking, and was on his way to the track medical centre".

Team boss Ron Dennis confirmed Hamilton had not been seriously injured in the crash, but insisted it was too early to say whether he would be able to participate in Sunday's race.

He told ITV: "They are keeping him in for a couple of hours' observation but the early indication is that he has no injuries.

"It's far too early to say but at the moment he doesn't appear to have pain anywhere, no broken bones. We won't be able to decide until after a few hours' observation, but so far, so good."

Dennis revealed Hamilton's 150mph smash was caused by a "failure of the right-hand wheel gun, so effectively the wheel wasn't properly put on".

He added: "But that's not the mechanic's fault. In fact, it was quite fortunate because the same gun was used on Fernando's (Alonso) car and he hadn't started to lean on it yet.

"We could tell from that it was a gun failure. At least we know we don't have a problem with the car."
