Hamilton breathes life into Silverstone

Silverstone officials are still revelling in the Lewis Hamilton effect on ticket sales for next month's British Grand Prix.

The future of the race remains in doubt with F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone still unhappy about certain aspects of the circuit, but the Northamptonshire venue is sure to be buzzing when Hamilton arrives for his first F1 race there, having wowed the crowds last year when winning both GP2 races in stunning fashion.

A Silverstone spokesman said: "If Lewis Hamilton became world champion it would be an absolute travesty for him not to have a home race. That is the main thing to focus on and everyone wants to be at Silverstone."

Hamilton heads the drivers' championships after his maiden grand prix win in Montreal last weekend and three-day tickets to see him in the flesh are selling fast.

"The win (in Canada) has had a massive impact and everyone seems to be going Lewis-mad," the spokesman added.

"It was something we had hoped would happen and people have now engaged with the fact there are only four weeks to go and they have got a chance of seeing him at Silverstone. The booking line and website have been inundated."
