Hamilton fulfils his dream

Lewis Hamilton on Sunday realised his childhood dream, and with added poignancy at the home of his all-time hero in Ayrton Senna.

Hamilton is the youngest world champion in Formula One history at the age of 23 years 301 days, beating the previous mark set by old adversary Fernando Alonso by 124 days.

"It's pretty much impossible to put into words," said Hamilton, who pipped Felipe Massa by a point at the end of a most dramatic Brazilian Grand Prix.

"It has been such a long journey, but with a lot of support from people back home.

"My team did a fantastic job all year, making a lot of sacrifices, and I'm so thrilled I've been able to do this for everyone.

"I wouldn't say it has been the most successful year overall, but to come out on top and to have the win, I am so thankful, I can't believe it.

"It is special to win the championship here in Brazil, but then on Senna's home ground, it was always going to be special."

Without doubt there has never been a more dramatic conclusion to a title campaign, and undeniably it was one of the most nailbiting in sporting history.

With title rival Felipe Massa coasting to victory, Ferrari and the hundreds of thousands of Brazilians were ready to party when Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel took the fifth place required by Hamilton just over two laps from home.

But as the thunder rumbled and black clouds gathered, there was hope on the horizon as Toyota opted to keep Timo Glock out on dry tyres. It was a gamble that was Hamilton's salvation because only 1,000 metres and 18 seconds from the finish, Hamilton swept past the German to reclaim fifth and with it the title.
