Hamilton: 'I'm absolutely fine'

Lewis Hamilton is hoping to be given the all clear to race in Sunday's European Grand Prix following a frightening 175mph smash in qualifying on Saturday.

The world championship leader buried his McLaren into a barrier at the Nurburgring after a faulty airgun led to the front-right wheel working loose.

But Hamilton said: "I'm absolutely fine and we will see later if I am able to race tomorrow. Everybody has been looking after me really well. I'm just pleased everything is okay and I really hope I can race."

Hamilton sustained no injuries, but after being attended to by trackside medics he was then taken to a nearby military hospital for a CT scan.

The 22-year-old is currently under observation, with a decision to be taken later on whether he will line up on the grid.

As soon as Hamilton's accident occurred, the qualifying session was red-flagged and brought to a halt.

If Hamilton is fit, he will start from 10th on the grid - his lowest qualifying position of the season.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen secured pole position for the race with McLaren's Fernando Alonso second and Felipe Massa third.
