Hamilton on Monaco pace

Lewis Hamilton could be on course to repeat his Monaco Grand Prix success of a year ago after a rejuvenating day of practice around the streets of the Principality he loves so much.

The world champion finished the day second quickest overall behind practice king Nico Rosberg, who has never yet been able to translate such form into qualifying and the race this season.

Rosberg topped the timesheets in his Williams for the ninth time in 17 sessions so far this season, yet his highest grid slot has only ever been fifth, picking up just 4.5 points overall.

If the German is to be discounted when it comes to Sunday's race, then Hamilton would appear to face a battle with the Brawn GP duo of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, whilst the Ferraris cannot be ruled out.

In the build-up to this race, McLaren and Hamilton indicated their car would be far better suited to a low-speed Monaco track compared to Barcelona 11 days ago where they languished throughout the Spanish Grand Prix weekend.

Behind Rosberg's time of one minute 15.243 seconds for the tight, twisty, barrier-lined circuit, Hamilton finished just two tenths of a second down in the afternoon session.

After claiming the third quickest time in the morning run behind Barrichello and Ferrari's Felipe Massa, this was undoubtedly the 24-year-old Hamilton's best practice day of the year.

Barrichello and Button were third and fourth overall, the latter just over half a second down on Rosberg, with Massa fifth.

Sebastian Vettel, whose morning outing was plagued by an engine problem as his session ended early with puffs of smoke spiralling from his car, was sixth, 0.604secs off the pace.

Finns Heikki Kovalainen and Kimi Raikkonen in their McLaren and Ferrari respectively finished just one thousandth of a second apart in seventh and eighth, with Williams' Kazuki Nakajima and the Renault of Nelson Piquet completing the top 10.
