The 22-year-old rookie careered into a tyre barrier during the final 15-minute qualifying session at the Nurburgring, where Kimi Raikkonen secured pole position.
A McLaren spokesperson said: "Lewis has no broken bones and no injuries, and he is conscious. At this moment we cannot say when we will make a decision on whether or not he will race."
"He is currently under observation at the trackside medical centre where he will remain for the next couple of hours." The Spokesperson added.
Team boss Ron Dennis confirmed "a failure of the right-hand wheel gun" led to one of Hamilton's wheels not being fitted properly.
At the start of one of the fastest parts of the circuit, Hamilton suffered a problem with the right-front suspension that led to the tyre bursting.
He then careered across a gravel trap before burying the nose of his car into the tyres.
The accident occurred with just over five minutes remaining, with Hamilton on a hot lap. The session was immediately red-flagged and brought to a halt with Hamilton soon attended to by stewards, while an ambulance was also quickly at the scene.
It was obvious he was shaken because at one stage as he tried to steady himself after climbing out of the cockpit of his car, he fell to the ground.
After 13 minutes he was eventually lifted into the back of the ambulance with his neck in a precautionary brace, while he was also on a drip. However, Hamilton was able to indicate he was okay as he waved his right arm and gave a thumbs-up sign.
