Hammers hopeful of Tevez deal

West Ham are confident they have reached an agreement that will allow Carlos Tevez to play in Saturday's Barclays Premiership clash with relegation rivals Wigan.

The club were hit with a record fine of £5.5million plus costs - but were spared a points deduction - by a three-man independent panel who found the Hammers had broken Premier League rules and had been "responsible for dishonesty and deceit" in the signing of the Argentina striker and his international team-mate Javier Mascherano, who has since moved to Liverpool.

Nevertheless, the club have been told Tevez is ineligible to play for them unless they cancel the third party agreement that exists in his original contract or amend it to the satisfaction of the Premier League. The Hammers have until midday on Saturday to reach an agreement that is to the satisfaction of the Premier League.

That means West Ham would have to stump up around £20million to buy Tevez outright or come to a genuine loan deal with the player's part-owner Kia Joorabchian. But it is understood they made quick progress on a new heads of agreement on Friday afternoon and are confident Tevez will get clearance from the Premier League to play at the JJB Stadium.

West Ham were fined £2.5million for signing contracts which allowed a third party influence over the club, and £3million for failing to inform the Premier League about it.

Former West Ham chief executive Paul Aldridge was found to have lied directly to Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore over the existence of documentation that should have been submitted.

The panel ruled: "We are of the view that these are exceedingly serious allegations because they amount to not only an obvious and deliberate breach of the rules but a grave breach of trust as to the FAPL (Premier League) and it's constituent members because in our finding the club has been responsible for dishonesty and deceit.

"These breaches....could have merited a points deduction and thus the financial penalty must reflect that."

West Ham are considering whether to appeal the fine and also gave strong indications on Friday night they could take legal action against the previous regime for landing the club in trouble.

A club statement read: "The club will reflect on the financial penalty that has been imposed and will take advice before commenting on the possibility of an appeal or any further steps that might be taken."
