Hanks handed Wasps reins

Wasps have confirmed the appointment of New Zealander Tony Hanks as their new rugby director.

Hanks takes over from current British and Irish Lions head coach Ian McGeechan, whose departure after four years at the helm was announced on Thursday.

Hanks initially linked up with Wasps in 2002 during Warren Gatland's coaching reign. He left in 2005, returning to New Zealand, and was latterly Waikato's head coach. But he also spent time with Wasps this season, working on secondment between November and April to support the coaching staff of McGeechan, Shaun Edwards and Leon Holden.

Edwards remains head coach at Wasps, while a forwards coach - thought to be England World Cup winner Trevor Woodman - will be announced in the coming weeks.

Wasps executive chairman Mark Rigby said: "Tony joins us with immediate effect, leading our pre-season programme as we push for the strongest possible start to next season.

"This year has certainly been one of change and of challenge, but all those who know Wasps and what this club stands for will be only too aware of the intent and desire to succeed on both the domestic and international stage.

"We have made no secret that as a club we are embarking on a new journey with long-term ambitions and goals, and believe in Tony Hanks we have a great man and a great coach to direct and lead our squad."

Hanks added: "I follow two pretty special coaches in Warren Gatland and Ian McGeechan - two guys that I have huge amount of respect for.

"I feel very honoured to follow in their footsteps, and I am thankful that I have not only had the opportunity to work with them, but to learn from them both as well.

"I came to Wasps in November with every intention of going back and resuming my Waikato commitments, but the Wasps role was an opportunity too good to turn down."
