Hanley lands Doncaster job

Ellery Hanley was back in rugby league on Friday after being unveiled as the new coach of part-time club Doncaster.

The National League Two outfit pulled off a coup with the capture of the 46-year-old former Great Britain captain and coach, who is widely acknowledged as a legend of the game.

Hanley, who has signed a three-year contract, said: "I was very impressed by the enthusiasm of the club. Money was not a factor. I was attracted by the different kind of challenge, taking the team from the doldrums."

Doncaster made the audacious move for Hanley following the sudden resignation of former St Helens forward John Stankevitch, who quit for personal reasons just five months into the job.

Hanley becomes Doncaster's fifth coach in just 12 months and is seen as a cornerstone of the club's ambitions to reach Super League by 2012.

Chairman Craig Harrison said: "We wanted to make a massive statement and this shows the intent of the club. There is an aura about Ellery and it's a fantastic signing for rugby league."
