Hargreaves: Rivals gunning for United

Owen Hargreaves has warned his Manchester United team-mates they will have to improve if they are to remain on their perch as kings of England and Europe.

Hargreaves will be a frustrated spectator on Sunday - after suffering a recurrence of tendinitis - as the Red Devils open the defence of their Barclays Premier League title against Newcastle.

"We will have to improve if we want to repeat the success we had last season," said the 27-year-old. "The more we win, the more other people want to knock us off our perch."

He added: "To win the Champions League again would be fabulous.

"But when you look at Barcelona they have gone out and signed some really good players. Real Madrid look good and Inter Milan will be strong under Jose Mourinho.

"In the Premier League Chelsea will be very hungry. They have great experienced players who are obviously not happy with us winning the league two years in a row.

"They have signed some new players as well and got a new manager, so they will make it tough for us, while I think Liverpool will close the gap this season as well."
