Hargreaves staying confident
06 January 2007
Steve McClaren's men head into this week's crucial Wembley double-header against Israel and Russia lying in fourth spot.
"It doesn't matter where we are now," Hargreaves said. "Croatia, Israel and Russia have done well so far but we are only halfway through."
Hargreaves does not believe much should be read into the present standings. With four home games remaining out of the five matches still to play, the 26-year-old is content England will eventually come good.
"There are still a lot of points to play for, so we will see who is there at the end. We are very confident."
And, while he recognises his major value to England is as a destroyer, Hargreaves admits he has no problem pushing forward if required.
"Goalscoring is not one of my biggest strengths but you take what is in front of you," he said.
"If there are opportunities to shoot, I will shoot.
"I know I am there more for the defensive side of things but I can score goals and sometimes you do have a spell where you score a few in a row.
"If I do score, then great, but I don't really care as long as we win."
