Harlequins climb to second

Danny Care returned to Headingley to orchestrate a 32-6 bonus-point victory which moved Harlequins into second place in the Guinness Premiership and all but sealed Leeds' relegation from the top flight.

Care progressed through the ranks at Leeds' academy before joining Quins in 2006 and has finally ousted Andy Gomarsall as the London club's established scrum-half.

The Leeds-born half-back played a prominent role against his former employers, combining effectively with fly-half Adrian Jarvis and scoring a 52nd-minute try before departing to warm applause shortly after the hour mark.

The match was finely poised at 11-3 in Quins' favour at half-time but the visitors moved through the gears after the break to register tries from Care, Jim Evans and captain Will Skinner to add to Mike Brown's first-half opener and earn a bonus point.

Newcastle's poor league form continued as London Irish kept alive their slim hopes of a play-off place with a 13-8 win at Kingston Park.

A penalty from Peter Hewat and a try from Declan Danaher put the Exiles into a deserved 8-0 lead.

Danaher added his second score and, despite Jonny Wilkinson kicking a penalty and Tom Visser going over for a late try, there was to be no comeback for the Falcons.

Newcastle were also dealt another blow as they lost Jonny Wilkinson with a worrying neck injury.

Wilkinson was left prone after a heavy tackle in midfield and while he was able to resume after treatment, eventually left the field with 12 minutes to play.
