Harmison makes early impact

Steve Harmison produced an early breakthrough for England in the bid to get Kevin Pietersen's reign as Test captain off to a winning start.

Recalled fast bowler Harmison struck in the third full over of the fourth morning to remove Hashim Amla as South Africa progressed to 133 for three - a lead of 11 runs.

A delivery of extra bounce had Amla, who made an attractive 76, fending outside off-stump and wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose suffered a moment of anguish as the ball squirmed out of his right glove and into his left.

England bowled with good discipline in their pursuit of wickets to earn a consolation victory in the npower series.

Harmison sent down three consecutive maidens to follow up his early morning success while James Anderson also proved economical.

South Africa added only 23 runs in the opening three quarters of an hour as Jacques Kallis scratched his way to three figures for the series.

He reached his 100 tally with a flashed drive at Harmison, in the first full over of the day, which flew to the third man boundary.
