Harmison is expected to travel to Africa under the watchful eye of bowling coach Ottis Gibson to play for Highveld Lions, but the exact arrangements have yet to be finalised, according to the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The Durham star has not played for England since suffering a hernia injury during the summer Test series against West Indies.

The injury ruled him out of the subsequent Tests against India and then a back problem while playing for Durham brought his season to an early end.

Harmison was awarded a central contract, although he faces a difficult fight to prove his fitness for the Sri Lanka tour, with the squad due to return to the island on November 15.
