Harmison targets victory and history

Steve Harmison is banking on coming out of his lean spell and joining England's hall of fame by leading a successful push for victory in the third npower Test on Monday.

West Indies resume the final day needing a further 154 runs for an historic victory, while Harmison is also set on a record of his own as he chases the one wicket required to become only the 11th England bowler in history to claim 200 Test victims.

After the Durham paceman claimed just one wicket on a frustrating day for England on Sunday, Harmison said: "I feel comfortable [about my bowling], but I just had one of those days where the harder I tried and the more I was chasing things, the more it went horribly wrong. That's life, these things happen and you have put them to the back of your mind as soon as you can."

He added: "I'm not saying I'm bowling as well as I'd like to bowl at this moment in time, but I'm still trying my nuts off to try and contribute to the team and I'm taking wickets along the way - while I'm doing that and while we're winning, hopefully the good patch will come."

Harmison was by no means alone in failing to bowl as well as he would like with Durham team-mate Liam Plunkett continuing his struggles and finished wicketless again.

Both bowlers have been helped by advice from bowling coach Allan Donald, but Harmison conceded the only people who can really guide them out of their slump is themselves.

"He's still giving everything he's got, but this is the way things go," said Harmison. "There are so many people saying you've got to relax and it will come easy, but it's easy for them to say - it's not them who have to go and bowl and it's not them in that position."

While England hope their seam attack will finally click and steer them to victory, the tourists are pinning their hopes on Shiv Chanderpaul (81 not out) using his vast experience to engineer an historic triumph.

West Indies currently hold the record for the highest successful fourth innings run-chase in a Test of 418 recorded against Australia in Antigua four years ago and coach David Moore believes another record could be theirs for the taking.

"We are in with as much of a chance as anyone else has been," he said. "We still have wickets in the shed and obviously we are very aware of how we've played and how effective that was. There is obviously excitement and enthusiasm and encouragement for the guys batting at the moment. Chanderpaul is under-estimated and under-rated - he is a world-class cricketer."
