Harrington puts team first

Padraig Harrington insists he would gladly trade individual success for another team triumph as Europe seek an unprecedented fourth straight Ryder Cup victory.

Even with three major titles now under his belt, the Dubliner maintains that Nick Faldo's side retaining the trophy at Valhalla is more important than his own performance.

"I hope to have the same performance as last time as long as the team wins," said Harrington, who only won half a point at the K Club. "I celebrated more at the K Club than when I performed well and we lost at Brookline. I never really got the spark I needed at the K Club and I'm looking forward to this one."

Harrington took a much-needed break last week after missing the cut in the first two FedEx Cup events in America and finishing 55th in the BMW Championship to miss out on the Tour Championship.

"I was thinking of staying in America but I was ready for a break with the family, that's what I really needed," admitted the 37-year-old. "We had a party to celebrate winning the USPGA and that was it."

He did find time to talk to Faldo though, and revealed what advice his captain has been dishing out and who he might partner in the foursomes and fourballs.

"Nick was giving me suggestions about what I needed to practice," Harrington added. "He said there are a lot of times you have to lay it up to 190 yards and there are chips from tight lies around the green.

"I would certainly expect to play with Graeme (McDowell) in one of the first four matches, probably fourballs rather than foursomes. In foursomes I prefer to play with someone more erratic. I enjoyed playing with Henrik Stenson at the K Club even though we didn't win.

"I could play with someone like Paul Casey in the foursomes, he plays similar enough to me, misses a few greens so I won't feel bad when I miss some. It would look a good partnership and leaves lots of options elsewhere."
