Hatters claim Sunderland scalp

Ten-man Sunderland, who were defeated by Liverpool on Saturday and face a trip to Manchester United this weekend, suffered a 3-0 defeat to League One Luton in the third round of the Carling Cup.

Three months ago Roy Keane's side clinched the Championship title with a 5-0 win at Kenilworth Road, but although the two teams are two divisions apart now the match could hardly have been more different.

Goalkeeper Darren Ward was beaten in the 15th minute by David Bell's free-kick and then twice by Paul Furlong with Sunderland's misery completed when right-back Greg Halford was sent off for a second booking after a deliberate handball.
