Hendry on top

Stephen Hendry threatened to record the second 147 maximum break in two days as he raced into a 7-1 lead over Ryan Day at the 888.com World Snooker Championship in Sheffield.

Just hours after Ronnie O'Sullivan's brilliant clearance against Mark Williams, Hendry potted 14 reds and 14 blacks in the fourth frame of his quarter-final with Welshman Day.

The Scot looked to have done all the hard work with a brilliant black with the rest a few shots earlier but missed the final red to end his chances of sharing the £147,000 bonus for a maximum and £10,000 for the highest break of the tournament.

The break of 112 was still enough to give the seven-time champion a 3-1 lead at the mid-session interval after Day had taken the opening frame with a break of 66.

Hendry then took the remaining four frames as well to open up a commanding six-frame advantage ahead of the evening session, where the 39-year-old will need six of the eight frames to win with a session to spare.

On the other table, Peter Ebdon and Ali Carter were locked at 4-4 after their opening session.

O'Sullivan was back in action on the same table where he made his 147, but quickly found himself 2-0 down to Chinese debutant Liang Wenbo in the quarter-finals.

O'Sullivan failed to pot a single ball as Liang, who beat Joe Swail 13-12 in a thriller last night, compiled breaks of 80, 48 and 49 to keep the two-time world champion sat in his chair. However, the Rocket hit back with breaks of 109 and 58 to level at 2-2 at the mid-session interval.

A break of 71 gave O'Sullivan the lead at 3-2 but Liang maintained his fearless approach and fired in breaks of 104 and 89 to edge back in front before O'Sullivan took the final frame of the session with a run of 64 to level at 4-4.

Stephen Maguire and Joe Perry were level at 4-4 in their quarter-final.
