Hendry relieved after dramatic win

Seven-time world snooker champion Stephen Hendry hailed his greatest ever first-round victory in 23 visits to the Crucible.

Hendry staged a superb fightback to beat Northern Ireland's Mark Allen in a thrilling clash at the 888.com World Championship in Sheffield, winning the last three frames to seal a 10-9 win and set up a meeting with either China's Ding Junhui or Hong Kong's Marco Fu in last 16.

A delighted Hendry said: "It's probably the greatest first-round match I've ever won in all the years I've been coming here. I was up against it the whole time, I felt outplayed a lot of the time and just hung in there basically and refused to go down."

Stuart Bingham held his nerve to seal a 10-8 victory over Steve Davis, and will next face either 2005 champion Graeme Dott or Joe Perry.

Davis looked down and out when Bingham took the first two frames of Monday's session to extend his lead to 8-3, but the 50-year-old responded to take take the next five frames and level the match at 8-8.

An epic 44-minute 17th frame could have gone either way but Bingham duly took the frame 72-60 and then held his nerve to compile a break of 59 to secure the victory.

Earlier in the day, Wales' Ryan Day booked a second-round clash with defending champion John Higgins thanks to a 10-6 victory over Ireland's Michael Judge, who came close to a 147 maximum break.

Mark King also had a great chance for a maximum, the left-hander potting 14 reds and 14 blacks before missing the 15th red down the cushion.

King trailed last year's runner-up Mark Selby 5-4 after the opening session of their match, which concludes on Tuesday.

Two-time winner Mark Williams is just two frames away from a place in the second round - he leads Sussex qualifier Mark Davis 8-1 after the opening session of their first-round match.
