Henman's defeat to Feliciano Lopez in the second round ensured Britain would not have a representative in the third round for the first time in 17 years.

He said: "We have to wipe the slate clean and start targeting the younger ones because that is our future."

Henman also vowed he would be back for another shot at the title after failing to summon up another epic victory over Lopez on Centre Court.

Henman clawed his way back from two sets down against the Spanish former quarter-finalist but could not close out the match, eventually going down 7-6 7-6 3-6 2-6 6-1.

At the age of 32 Henman's best days might be behind him, but after another gutsy performance following his first-round epic against Carlos Moya, he has no intention of calling it a day.

Henman added: "I will reflect on the two matches I've played. That is the tennis I want to play more regularly.

"There's no reason why I can't do that. I'm not going to play forever, but I'm passionate about what I do. I love what I do. I want to make the most of it."
