Hewitt ousted by Djokovic

Home favourite Lleyton Hewitt saw his hopes of glory in the Australian Open dashed by a ruthless display from Novak Djokovic.

The Serbian, seeded third, bettered his previous best effort of reaching the fourth round last year with a 7-5 6-3 6-3 success in Melbourne to book a quarter-final place.

The 26-year-old Hewitt, seeded 19th, lacked his usual energy after being taken to five sets in the previous round by Marcos Baghdatis.

Djokovic wasted two break points in the fourth game of the opening set and was punished in the next game by Hewitt.

However, Djokovic broke back in the eighth game and then found himself with three set points on Hewitt's serve in the 12th - an opportunity which he grabbed at the first time of asking.

The pair exchanged further breaks early in the second, but Djokovic seemed to be growing in confidence and secured another decisive break in the sixth game before holding off Hewitt to open up a two-set lead.

The Serbian never looked like squandering his advantage in the third set and wrapped up the win in two hours and 26 minutes.

He will now face fifth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer in the last eight.
