Lampard was abused by the fans he left in 2001 and missiles were aimed at him after Salomon Kalou's winner, but he had the last laugh as Chelsea warmed up for Tuesday's clash against Barcelona with a 1-0 win over Gianfranco Zola's men.

"I have rested some players but if I had suggested that to Frank, well, I didn't even talk to him about it," Hiddink said. "He would have looked at me as if to say, 'Why are you doing that?' These guys with big personalities, they want to play every game."

He added: "Maybe some time in the near future I will have to tell him he's not going to play, but without looking at him I think."

Zola sympathised with his former team-mate.

"It's a long story," Zola said. "They didn't forgive him for leaving. Frank is a very good professional, a very good boy and it makes me sorry to think he has a problem with this crowd."

Lampard set up the 55th-minute winner with a floated cross. It then needed Petr Cech to save Mark Noble's penalty to keep Chelsea ahead.

"It's not a confidence boost for him (Cech)," Hiddink added. "He showed against Everton this week, he made some good saves there too.

"We don't deny that he had difficult times before but when a goalie makes decisive saves then it's good for him."
