Higgins eases through

World champion John Higgins impressed in the Far East as he became the first player through to the quarter-finals of the Honghe Industrial China Open.

The Scottish cueman inflicted a 5-1 defeat on Mark King, and said afterwards: "I finished the match well. I gave Mark a lot of chances early on so I'm pleased to win."

Welshman Mark Williams is also in the last eight after overcoming former world champion Peter Ebdon 5-2, while Glaswegian Stephen Maguire - this season's Northern Ireland Trophy winner - defeated Barry Hawkins by the same scoreline.

The Scot will play qualifier Nigel Bond in the next round after he eased to a 5-1 win over Barry Pinches.

Former world champion Shaun Murphy upset home favourite Ding Junhui to book his place in the quarter-finals.

The Rotherham player edged to a 5-4 victory and will now play Belfast's Mark Allen in the last eight.

Allen booked his place in the quarter-finals with a workmanlike 5-3 victory over Tiptree's Ali Carter.

Also through to the last eight are Leicester player Mark Selby and Welshman Ryan Day.

Selby, twice a ranking-event winner already this season, impressed with breaks of 70, 43, 49, 48, 63, 43 and a match-clinching 127 to beat Hong Kong's Marco Fu 5-3.
