Hinds set for Phantoms stint

West Indian batsman Wavell Hinds will play for Derbyshire in this summer's Twenty20 Cup as an overseas player.

The 31-year-old had originally signed for the Phantoms as a Kolpak player for the entire season but had his registration blocked by the England and Wales Cricket Board because he had participated in the unsanctioned Indian Cricket League.

"I have always been keen to bring Wavell to Derbyshire as he has all the qualities we are looking for - experience, ability and character," said head of cricket John Morris.

Hinds' new deal means he will turn out in each of the county's 10 Twenty20 Cup matches - and the quarter-finals if they qualify - as well as the LV County Championship match against Essex starting on June 29.

The West Indian's arrival means Chris Rogers will take a mid-season break as originally intended.

Morris added: "It hasn't worked out as planned but by coming in for the Twenty20 period he will give us a fresh impetus and real expertise in that format of the game.

"He is an exciting player, contributes with both bat and ball and is just what we need for Twenty20 cricket."
