Hingis out of French Open

Martina Hingis has pulled out of the French Open with a hip injury.

Tournament organisers revealed on Wednesday that the former world number one had withdrawn from the only grand-slam event she is yet to win.

She will be replaced in the draw by fellow Swiss Emmanuelle Gagliardi, and joins Evgenia Linetskaya (personal reasons) on the withdrawal list.

Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan and Nicolas Kiefer, of Germany, will both miss the men's competition owing to wrist injuries.

The French Open begins in Paris on May 27.
